Espadrilles Made in Spain: Women’s Craftsmanship from Irun

They are not born just anywhere. They are born here.

At a time when much footwear is manufactured far away, quickly, and impersonally, our espadrilles are made entirely in Spain and retain something increasingly exceptional: origin, hands, and discernment. They are born in Irun, in our own workshop, where each model begins as an idea that gradually transforms into something tangible, designed to accompany someone in their real life.

But there is something even more important: they are born from women. Women who design with other women in mind, who understand how the body moves throughout the day, what it means to walk through a city for hours or work standing up without sacrificing elegance. Women who sew, adjust, test, and review each model with an intuition that is not learned from manuals, but by walking, observing, and listening.

This silent knowledge is what gives meaning to Juncal Aguirre espadrilles.

Designing for those who will experience it

When we design an espadrille, we don’t just think about how it looks. Aesthetics are important, of course, but never the only factor. What truly interests us is how someone will feel wearing it for hours.

For each model, there are very specific questions: whether the wearer will walk a lot, if they will use it for work, if they are looking for comfortable everyday footwear, or if they imagine it accompanying a special moment like a celebration or a wedding. We also consider something fundamental: how to enhance style without demanding sacrifice.

For too long, it has been assumed that elegance implies discomfort. We believe the exact opposite. That is why each design is born from an invisible conversation between its creator and its wearer. This conversation is present in the wedge height, the weight balance, the vamp shape, and the choice of materials.

When Juncal Aguirre espadrilles are designed from the real experience of those who wear them, the result changes completely.

A workshop where craftsmanship is still alive

Our workshop in Irun does not operate like an anonymous factory. It is a place where knowledge is built over time, where experience weighs as much as the tools, and where each step of the process is done very close to the previous one.

Here, pieces are cut. Here, they are sewn. Here, they are mounted on a jute sole. And here, they are tested repeatedly before a model is considered finished.

Working this way transforms the relationship with the product. It does not suddenly appear at the end of a production line, but rather grows before us step by step. The hands that design are the same ones that review, adjust, and observe how each model performs.

We constantly test our own espadrilles. It is the only way to know if something truly works. If a seam is bothersome, it is corrected. If a strap is too tight, it is adjusted. If a model does not convey what we are looking for, it simply does not go to market.

That is what craftsmanship means to us.

Meaningful local production

We choose to manufacture our espadrilles for a very simple reason: we believe in consistency.

Manufacturing locally allows us to truly control quality, work with materials we know well, and maintain a direct relationship with every part of the process. It also means supporting the local economy and a way of working that respects the pace of the product and the people.

Today, many garments travel thousands of kilometers before reaching the buyer. In our case, the distance is much shorter. Our espadrilles are born in the Irun workshop and from there begin their journey to the feet of those who will wear them.

This closeness is not just geographical. It is also noticeable in the details.

Much more than a pair of espadrilles

When someone puts on Juncal Aguirre espadrilles, they are not just wearing jute, leather, or fabric. They are wearing hours of small decisions made throughout the process: tests, adjustments, material choices, and many expert eyes reviewing every detail.

They also carry experience, discernment, and the pride of a job well done. And, in a way, they carry something that is almost revolutionary today: knowing exactly where what you are wearing comes from.

Because our espadrilles are not born on an anonymous production line. They are born in a specific place, from specific hands, with a clear intention: to create footwear that accompanies women in their real lives, with beauty, comfort, and the peace of mind of knowing that authentic craftsmanship is behind it.

This is how our espadrilles made in Spain begin. And this is also how many journeys begin.
