This is how an espadrille is made, step by step until it reaches your feet.

An espadrille does not begin with the sole. It begins with an idea. With a woman. With a story that deserves to be told.

This is how our espadrilles are born in Irun, at Calzanor, a factory where we are women designing and making footwear for women. We are driven by a shared intuition: knowing that good design can change a day, an attitude, a way of walking.

We design with you in mind

Each model begins with a question: How will the woman who wears this feel? What kind of life will she live in these espadrilles? What does she need, what is she looking for, what does she want to express?

We design with beauty in mind, yes, but also with the gaze of others. We want the world to pause for a second to look at your feet when you wear our espadrilles. Because they shine. Because you shine. Because such beautiful design should not go unnoticed.

When a model becomes a favorite, we analyze it thoroughly. Why is it so popular? What does it have that connects? And we try to understand that essence to inspire new designs—not to copy, but to evolve.

From idea to first step

The first step is the design. Then we create the patterns so that everything fits precisely when it comes to cutting. We test them, try them on, make necessary adjustments. If something rubs, pinches, or feels uncomfortable, it does not pass. The sample must be perfect. Only then does production begin.

How a Juncal Aguirre Espadrille Is Made

  1. Cutting: The pieces of the model are cut by hand from selected materials: leather, suede, natural fabrics…
  2. Stitching: This is when those pieces are joined together. They are sewn with care and precision to form the upper part of the footwear.
  3. Sole preparation: A cushioned insole is added to the jute base, providing comfort and shape.
  4. Assembly: The upper part (vamp and back) is joined to the sole. This step requires experience, attention to detail, and a rhythm that only comes with practice.
  5. Oven and finishing: The espadrilles go through heat to set their structure. Then they are inspected, brushed, and packaged.

This entire process is carried out by women who understand footwear as more than just an accessory. We see it as a companion on the journey, as a part of you.

We walk with you

Now that you know how an espadrille is made, we hope that when you wear a Juncal Aguirre you feel something more than comfort. That you feel pride, identity, connection.

Because it is made with you in mind, with soul, from our hands to your steps.
